Living the music lifestyle doesn't always mean submitting
to the dark call of substance abuse. Proving that music
can prevail without selling your morals, the members of
Throwdown instill values into their work, sending out the
message that you can live clean, that you can live free of
mind altering items, and still have fun. No, they aren't
preaching, nor do they worship in the house of
scientology, although they do believe in the ability to think
clearly, to have control over oneself instead of hanging
your life over to man name Jack Daniel's and a jagged
little pill. "The one thing that bothers me about
straightedge is that there is no
respect for the older people,
they think they know all about
straightedge. You get all these
kids that think they know what
it is, they try to school you on
straightedge, and they're like 14.
There just isn't any respect, and
it's not like we're forcing it on
you. It's our choice, and just
because we believe it doesn't
mean you have to. If you're
straightedge because it's a trend
to you, that’s not right either."
Being from Huntington Beach I
was anxious to hear about David
and Mark's views on their native
city breed brethren Avenged
Sevenfold, the polar opposites in
action when compared to
Throwdown. "I actually went to
high school with Matt, their
singer, and Middle school with
Jimmy, their drummer, who's
nickname was Boner in Middle
school. It was funny, I ran into him and I'm like 'Boner?!'
and he's goes well, 'No, actually it's the Reverend now.'
And I'm like, 'No. It's Boner. Ya know?' Those dudes are
really cool you know? We run into them here and there
over the years, and I think it's awesome how huge their
band has grown, because I know Matt as a musician has
always worked really hard, he's the one I know best. But
this isn't something I wouldn't say to them, I do have a
hard time with that. I will say this, I don't think those
guys are really druggies, or assholes, or anything like that.
I think it's just the image of the band, and I don't really
have a problem with that. If that’s what they want to
do with their band, I can't really tell them what to do
with their band as I wouldn't expect them to tell me
what to do with my band. I think it's a shame,
because obviously they're a band that have had their
video on TRL, and lets face it the one's watching it are
17 or 16 and younger, and they're influenced easily,
more impressionable...I wouldn't want my kid or my
little brother to be reading an article about snorting
blow off of a strippers ass. I struggle with that a little
bit, I don't agree with it...but
what kind of place would
you live in if you couldn't
express yourself how you
want? You definitely won't
see that in a Throwdown
interview."
