As Americans, we have all made jokes about Canadians,
from time to time. Some things we just can’t understand.
Like how Chad of Nickleback, a Canadian band, who
endorses Refrigerators. Yes I said refrigerators. Which
baffled me, considering if an American artist did such a
thing, we would all call them a sell out, this appliance
endorsing business is something that has been flying
completely underneath my radar, apparently it has been
flying underneath Burlington ’s Silverstein’s as well.
“What?!” Shane told vocalist ask. “He endorses
refrigerators.” I repeat. “Wait a minute what?” Neil Boshart
asks again. “Do you mean like Maytag?” Billy Hamilton,
bassist asks. “Yea.” I nod. They all laugh, “Are you fucking
kidding me?” Paul Koehler exclaims. “Yea, I never heard
anything like it.” I say. “It doesn’t surprise me.” Told says.
“I think I’d like to endorse toasters.” Hamilton jokes, “Nah,
I’m more a microwave guy.” Told says.
It’s getting harder and harder every day to ignore
what’s going on north of the border in Canadian
Especially the 905 music scene which at
the moment is being led by Burlington ’s
own Silverstein, “Yea we try to go out to
shows as much as possible when we’re
home.” Billy Hamilton bassist of Silverstein
says, as he twirls his mustache, which
gives the Monopoly guy a run for his
money. Burlington , a suburb of Toronto ,
just a mere 40 minutes from St. Catherine’
s, Alexisonfire’s turf. “ Burlington ’s scene
is a lot different than St. Catherine’s.”
Hamilton comments. A lot in deed, in the
Burlington district alone there are tons of
bands, however not so many venues. “
Burlington has always had a really strong
music scene; the one thing that Burlington
is lack is venues. There are so many bands
per capita, so venues are really hard to
come by. A lot bands end up playing in the
greater Troy area, like Hamilton , and other
places right outside of Toronto .” Neil
Boshart guitarist explains. That would
explain Silverstein’s venture out into the
market of the United States , with them
signing to Victory records, not to quote
anyone directly, but who could pick a
better title for Silverstein’s fourth coming
record Arrivals & Departures, released on
Victory in July. Needless to say Victory
has high hopes for these young lads, with
their last record Discovering the Water
Front sold 300,000 copies, a feat done all
on Silverstein’s own with word of mouth
and non-stop touring. However you’ll find
yourself hard pressed to get these guys to
open up about their music or band politics.
