A year ago, Nyght Scene sat down with James Daniels of Bullets and
Octane for what would be one of Nyght Scene’s first Cover Stories. A
lot has happened since then. Bullets and Octane has dropped their label,
not to be confused with getting dropped by their label. They have
recorded and produced a new record Song for the Underdog not to
mention opening for Unwritten Law all summer, which means James
and the gang are where they feel most comfortable The Road. We had
a chance to chat with Daniels when Bullets and Octane strolled
through St. Petersburg recently.

NS: Sorry to point it out, but I definitely have to point out that
your attire has changed since the last time we saw you.
JD:
Absolutely it has, but you have to change it up, because you get
boring and nobody wants boring. I’m just out here to have fun its
summer time. I was doing the whole urban cowboy thing last time. It
was fun for a while, then you start seeing people that you don’t like
dressing like you. So it was time for it to go, I threw it all right in the
trash.  It’s just for fun, these guys on the tour like to give me shit,
‘You just let me know who’s cutting pant legs off, I’ll fucking get
them.’

NS: What’s your opinion of the new record?
JD: I love it for what it is. It’s definitely not in the same vain as the
last record. We wrote songs this time instead of riffs and growls. We
had a lot of time to think it out; we wrote over 60 songs for this
record. We had a really hard time picking through the songs. We had a
lot of rocking songs, and we had a lot of melodic songs. We wanted to
keep a lot of the melodic songs and we had to cut a lot of the edgier
songs in the process. Everyone likes our song Pirates, so why don’t
we give them a few more like that?   I mean who wants to put out the
same record twice?

NS: For someone who grew up listening to Slash and Zakk
Wylde, are their different influences that come out on this
record?
JD:
We have a little bit of swing, we don’t really go rockabilly, but I
have been listening to a lot of rockabilly lately, mainly Brain Setzer type
stuff, The Stray Cats, Brian Setzer Orchestra and The Living End. I
got to break out my Retch big Hollow Body thing. It’s this big ugly
orange thing that I have. Its way too big and boxy but I fucking love
that guitar, and I got to bust that out a lot on this record, so I was
happy.
