restructuring of 80’s pop,
         and arena rock with punk
       energy.”

Bred locally out of Odessa, Florida, to
be exact, which is about 30 minutes
east of Tampa, Tears in the Sahara has
been in existence for about two and a
half years, but have become a
prominent band in the Tampa scene.
“It’s so competitive, because you have
to get these people to like you. If there’
s five bands at the show, you want to
be better than all of them,
subconsciously even though they're all
your friends. But now you can put
aside the competitiveness, and be like,
‘Definitely come play the show.’ and
the crowd has gotten so much better
too, they won’t leave. If they’re there
for one band, they’ll stay for the whole
night.”  Joe says, commenting on the
local Tampa scene. “A lot of the
“hardcore” stuff has died out. We used
to play with those bands nonstop and
we didn’t really have any bands that
we could have
camaraderie with or
that we sound
similar to. It was
cool playing with
them, but sometimes
their fans wouldn’t
like us.” Josh says.
“Yeah, thier fans are
a little more intense;
they’re really loyal to
their group. They’re
really not open to any
other kind of style.”
Diego adds. Since the
start of Tears, a lot
has followed since then, things like an
indie record contract with Tampa’s
own Lucky Penny Records. Tears
recorded their first album for Lucky
Penny as well Breaking Circuits,
Burning Bridges. “We recorded it
ourselves, it was supposed to be just
demos basically, and we came out with
12 songs worth of demos. While
recording we just had so many
computer failures and we lost our old
bass player while we were recording it.
Just a bunch of negative stuff
happened, so we titled it Breaking
Circuits, Burning Bridges.” Josh
explains.

Not bad for a band full of 21 year-old
kids that take their name from the
Police song, “Tea in the Sahara”; they
just added an "A".  However it’s not all
fun and games, these young dudes
have to still hold down day jobs, or
juggle a college load at USF. So it’s not
all music, beer, and broads; those are
just the highlights at the end of the day.
“I got molested at a show a few
times.” Joe chirps with a
devilish smirk. “Literally, we
were playing a show in Brandon, and
this girl is just intoxicated and I was
playing and she starts grabbing my
junk. And she just starts making out
with me while I’m trying to play. I’m
like its cool, looking back it was really
disgusting, but at the time I thought it
was pretty cool.” Joe says with the
rest of Tears chuckling.

With personalities as laid back as
Tears, it’s hard to imagine them ever
being able to become jaded rock stars.
“I’d get up every morning at 5 am and
do 20 interviews without any
complaints.” Andrew chimes. “No you
wouldn’t!” quickly responds Diego,
They both laugh. “We wouldn’t be the
type of band that would go out and be
dicks, we would just be happy that
were just doing something, being able
to play music for a living.” says Josh.
