Chances are you know the voice
of Kimya Dawson even if you don’t know her
music you know her voice. Considering that more
than most of you have seen a little known movie
Juno, you have heard the voice of innocence
through the vessel of Miss Dawson.
In the early 2000’s Dawson became known
as the counterpart of Adam Green in the Moldy
Peaches. Since the hiatus of The Moldy Peaches in
2004, Dawson has released a string of Lo-fi homemade
albums with little help from a label. Since the explosion
of the film Juno, Dawson’s notoriety has sky rocketed.
Although Dawson has been doing the solo thing, she
still loves the lost art of collaboration. Collaborating
with everyone from indie superstars Ben Kweller,
They Might Be Giants, The Mountain Goats, John
Wayne Shot Me to big names like Third Eye Blind and
Regina Spektor. Frank Black of Pixies fame has even
called Kimya Dawson a ‘road warrior,’ a name that
couldn’t be more suitable. On any given day Dawson
can be seen on a US Highway in her Mini Van driving
with her baby girl in the back, on her way to “spread
joy,” and will most likely give you hugs. After said
show she will most likely ask you if she can crash on
your couch, not because she is barely scraping by,
can’t afford a hotel, and not because she can’t crash with the other bands on the tour,
but because she is on a mission to meet everyone in the world and literally embrace
them one at a time. It’s kind of ironic for someone in the Anti-Folk movement.
Get ready for the full embrace, Dawson’s new record, her fourth solo album entitled
Hidden Vagenda slated for a October release, it is rumored to have over 30
collaborators including Stephen Jenkins, Daniel Johnston, Vanessa Carlton, former
members of Guns N Roses, as well old friends from the Anti-Folk Movement, and even
Dawson’s mother. According to her official website, “I remember waking up and
thinking, Hey! I want to have all my friends involved in my next project!"
Hidden’s 14 tracks were recorded in 3 different studios in St. Ouen, France,
Birmingham, England, and New York City. This album marks the first time Dawson has
recorded a solo record outside of her bedroom in the house that she shares with her
mother, father, brother and nephew. The house also doubles as a daycare center
during the day as well. “I knew that all those people couldn’t fit in my bedroom, not to
mention recording with all that noise.” Dawson explains. Hidden Vagenda is set to be
released on October 5th through K Records, her label in Olympia, Washington. [End]
