Not your everyday and they're all the better for it. Circus of Dead Squirrels (abbreviated to
CODS by the band itself) started in 2001. Created by then high schoolers Pancho Ripchord
(Matt Foran), Ninja Turtle Liberace (Daniel Raphael) and Von Boc (John Beeler), Circus of
Dead Squirrels is a wonderfully macabre break from the norm. The members were hugely
influenced by industrial, blending their original aim for a ska band with the industrial
theme form their past and giving their fans a bit of ska-metal. The
name of the band wasn't always so set in stone, in fact they were originally
named Toilet Duck (not quite as impressive, is it?)
Flash forward, 2007. From a band that originally used synthesizers to make up for
their lack of musical talent, CODS has grown up to earn the Rock Solid Pressure Album
of the Year award for it's second year with the band's release The Pop Culture Massacre.
Not CODS had also taken a respectable place at the Rock Solid Pressure Showcase earlier
that year.
"Congratulations to Connecticut's own 'Circus Of Dead Squirrels' for winning this
honor two years in a row. Their debut CD took the vote last year, and their sophomore
effort totally blew us away again this year. This is one of the most creative and original
industrial bands we have ever seen." Say J Rock and Patty. And who can say anything
different? If you'd like to try, head on over to http://www.circusofdeadsquirrels.com/ and
we'll talk after you take a listen.
What's up with Circus of Dead Squirrels now? A show with up and coming rock act,
Mindless Self Indulgence, that's what! Unfortunately, you're only going to see this if you live
in or around Hartford, Connecticut. If you can be there, be there. The band will even be
promoting new merchandise. If you need a discount, just order the tickets from the guys
themselves! They'll even include shipping in the price. [Lauren Connelly]
In true punk fashion, little is known about the San Luis Obispo, California band
NEW TOMORROW, which in turn makes my job that much more difficult. But I
enjoy challenge. When first stumbling across their Myspace the direct and no bull-
shit sound is what caught my attention, and it was then that I could see why they
were signed to Jersey eclectic label Skeleton Crew Records, owned by one Frank
Iero of Leathermouth fame. (Yeah, so he’s also part of another band, that goes
without saying.) As quoted on S//C (Skeleton Crew) Online “The days of stage
diving, mic grabbing, circle pitting, pile-ons, shoe losing, get your glasses broken,
sing alongs, and fists in the air returns with NEW TOMORROW” which only
entices the listener to sit a while longer and to soak in a little more.
We live in a time where Avril Levigne, her ties, and her fingerless gloves are
considered punk rock. Kids of this generation have no idea what the feeling of
rebellion and revolution feels like because they’re too wrapped up in Myspace and
too worried about getting their IPODs taken away by Mommy and Daddy. Fuck that.
When I was a kid rebellion ran thick in the streets of Detroit. Then, people held
protests, they burned things, they instilled pride in everything they did. They did
not simply say they believed in something because it was the “cool” thing to do.
NEW TOMORROW brings back those feelings for me. Listening to the tracks listed
on their Myspace makes me want to get out of my chair and start something. Viva
NEW TOMORROW. Bring on your revolution boys, I’m waiting. [HmH]
