March 8, 2008.  I had just
started working for Nyght Scene, and I got
the opportunity to sit in on an interview with
George from Flogging Molly, one of my favorite
bands currently touring.  While listening to George
spill some fascinating stories from the road and the
studio, I heard tones floating through the thin glass window of
the apartment that serves as the Jannus Landing backstage
area.  The sounds were reminiscent of the Pogues, Dropkick
Murphys, and even Flogging Molly.  George indicates that this
is, indeed, the Japanese band known as The Cherry Cokes.
Their music could have easily been played at one of 100 Irish
pubs scattered throughout Boston.  The vocals sounded like
they were coming out of an English-speaking native.  As the
interview with George concluded, we walked into the
kitchenette area of the backstage apartment to see the Japanese
crew gathered around the counter.  “Good Show,” announced
George as we neared the band.  “Thank you very much,” the
Cherry Cokes responded as they clapped their hands together
and gave a short bow.  It took me a moment to realize that this
was the same band we were rocking out to just a few moments
prior.

Nine years ago, The Cherry Cokes got together to start
playing their blend of Irish folk and punk to audiences
throughout Japan.  When their first album, Beer My Friends,
was released, the band received national attention in Japan with
their videos airing on MTV and SpaceShower TV.  Throughout
the last 9 years, The Cherry Cokes have spent time touring Japan with the likes of The
Casualties, Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys, and were added to the bill of the 2008
Green 17 tour organized and headlined by Flogging Molly.  They have since been receiving
buzz from indie circles nationwide.  The Cherry Cokes are much more than a novelty act.
They have true talent and they really know how to rile up a drunken crowd.  They are
currently signed to Bullion Records in Japan, and they do not have a distribution deal in the
United States.  So, you will need to order their CDs directly from their website,
www.thecherrycokes.com (that is, if you speak Japanese.  Be sure to keep your eye on these
Japanese Irish punks in the years to come.

"The CCs' combine musical finesse with a raw ferocity that will shatter the walls of
your apartment and smash all your furniture to matchwood. Unbeatable and
unmissable, nobody has any right to be this good. I cannot emphasize this point
strongly enough. BUY THIS RECORD NOW AND PLAY IT VERY LOUD!!"
