“I wake up, I get drunk, I get drunk and
give up. So what‘s new, and so what? You’re not
fucking special!” Gene Louis of Bullets and Octane
sings on Song For the Underdog, the lead track off their
third full length release by the same name, through Ares
Records. Underdog is this Orange County band’s first release
since leaving their major label deal with RCA.
Most bands would kill for a shot at a major label deal with a label
the caliber of RCA, but as Louis will tell you it‘s not all it‘s
cracked up to be. “They just kept dropping the ball on things.”
Louis says of RCA. “The CD [In the Mouth of The Young] was
done, mastered and recorded ready to go. Then we went on that
Avenged Sevenfold tour for three months, and we’re like ‘come
on push the record, get it out there, get it out there.’ I mean what
are you waiting for it’s a good time for it. They just had other
things lined up, and weren’t really into us. Then they finally put
the record out, but it the week after that tour was done.” He adds.
“We just decided to do things on our own this time” Louis
explains. He means that literally, with Bassist Brent Clawson
producing along with Louis, Drummer Ty Smith and former
guitarist James Daniels (who has since left the band and been
replaced by Kevin Besignano) throwing their hands in. “We’ve
learned from our previous producers that there might be great
producers out there, but they don’t spend enough quality time
on anything. They get a nice pay check to sit there and go ‘yeah,
sounds good, sounds good.’ Obviously it’s our little baby, so
we are going to treat it a little more carefully.” Louis explains.
More carefully indeed. One thing that Louis and company don’t
treat carefully however is their livers. Beer, scotch, whiskey it
doesn’t matter what they’re drinking when they are playing their
favorite drinking game, “You’re Gonna Get It.” The rules are
simple. If you are drinking with the boys from Bullets and
Octane, you’re gonna get it. [End.]
