Nashville, Tennessee doesn’t
exactly jump off the map when you think of punk
rock music. However, Be Your Own Pet may just
change that. Consisting of Jemina Pearl (vocals)
Jonas Stein (Guitar), Nathan Vasquez (Bass), and
John Eatherly (Drums), the adolescent laced punk act from
the same city who’s claim to fame is “The Country Music
Capitol of the World,” don’t care where they’re from or
about people’s conceptions of what being from Nashville
is all about. Obviously geography has no relevance here
what so ever. Currently on tour with She Wants Revenge with
The Nylon Magazine Music Tour in support of their
sophomore release Get Awkward, BYOP has needless to say
matured. “When you’re younger, have a specific idea of
punk.” Pearl comments, “If you don’t do this, or look like that,
then you’re not punk. Screw that. The Stooges featured sax
improvisation, The Ramones sang love songs. There are no
rules. But Sometimes you forget that because you’re trying to
fit into the mold you think you’re supposed to. This time we
broke out and did what came naturally.”
What came naturally was scary at times for the quartet, who
were dead set against messing with their formula. “It was like
‘try a slow song.’ No way. That’s not what we do.” says the
young singer. “But then you realize that doing other things
doesn’t make you less true to your self.” She adds. “In the
end, were glad that we did the slower songs.” Don’t be discouraged by Get
Awkward, those bratty attack fight are songs still laced through Awkward like
the HIV in a hooker’s blood stream, with songs like opening track “Super
Soaked”, “Kelly’s Affair”, and “Food Fight.” If you’re looking for more violence
make sure you get your hands on a copy of the UK version of Get Awkward,
with three more songs on it that were by the band’s label for their lyrics being
too violent for a US Release. Missing from the US release of Awkward is “Black
Hole,” “Blow Yr Mind”, and “Becky,” a situation that left the band frustrated
needless to say. “It’s bullshit!” Stein comments, “The original flow of
everything is completely distorted now.” says Vasquez. “It was pretty
heartbreaking when we found out. I couldn’t believe it. But now we’re excited
that XL [Recordings] is going to put them out. So it’s not like we have to throw
away these three songs that we think are pretty fucking awesome.” Pearl adds.
Pearl and the boys will be bring the Awkward violence to the road this summer
on Warped Tour, so make sure you Get Awkward. [End.]
