When forming a 'rock-band', one does not usually draw inspiration from
the likes of N'Sync and The Backstreet Boys. However, in the case of Alex
DeLeon, singer, forming The Cab, the next best thing out of Las Vegas
(take that Panic! At the Disco) that is exactly what he did. Way to stick it
to the mand there, Alex. This interview almost didn't happen. Februrary
first, 25 days before this interview, around 3 AM, the Cab's van slid on a
patch of ice on a highway in Wisconsin. The van flipped a few times, and
the trailer and van both ended practically upside down in the median of
the freeway. No one was seriously injured, thankfully, but all band
members sustained injuries.
The Cab trekked on through the Really Really Ridculously Good
Looking Tour, and were here now to play a sold out show at the State
Theater. "It's a great feeling. "We're really thankful for Cobra. I mean, they
have been working really hard and these shows are sold out because of
their success. When we walk out there, and see a room packed of kids, it
feels good. Even though we know most of them aren't there for us."
The newest addition to Fueled By Ramen and its imprint label,
DecayDance, The Cab have joined fellow label mates Cobra Starship on
the tour. "The Cab is Bdefinately pop-rock with a very organic soulful
approach. Like, alot of classic sould and newer R-n-B put into pop rock.
Basically, take modern R-n-B and put a unique approach on it."
Since the wreck, the fans of The Cab have really stepped up their game.
"We've had people bring us crazy things like socks and band-aids, first
aid kits, gift cards. The fans have been really super nice and suportive
towards us." The equipment was ruined, the band's personal belongings
were lost and broken, and their bodies were pretty beat up. But yet, they
all managed to walk away.
"They help us out, and hopefully we can help them out in
different ways." he nods.
The basic idea for the band was formed two or
three years ago. In April 2006, with band members still in highschool, Alex
brought a demo CD to a Cartel/Boys Like Girls/Cobra Starship show and
ran into Jon Walker and Spencer Smith from Panic! At The Disco; he gave
them a demo and from there they got hooked up with Decaydance
/Fueled By Ramen. Could that be any more perfect? To be on
a label with your favorite bands?
"It's awesome. I mean, we get to hang out with Panic, we're
on tour with Cobra. When we are at dinner with Pete [Wentz],
its almost surreal. A couple of years ago, I was a kid
waiting for hours to see Fall Out Boy or Panic! At The
Disco's first show. Decaydance and Fueled By Ramen has
some of my favorite bands and it's so surreal being signed
by the people I look up to. Being a part of that is just a
really cool, special feeling; I can't explain it and I wouldn't
have it any other way."
