Wolves
Idiot Pilot
Reprise
****

Leave it to Reprise Records to
sign the band that meshes the
sound of every buzz band that
they never signed. Washington
State natives Idiot Pilot released
their sophomore effort through
Reprise Records, Wolves on
February 12, 2008. The title may
sound familiar because it was
digitally released back in October
of 2007, because that’s what all
the cool kids do now. Wolves is
the collective effort of the duo and
best mates Daniel Anderson and
Michael Harris. Wolves, has a
contradiction for every season. It’
s Organic and chemical at the
same time, it’s Mellow and
Energetic. Sometimes the
Contradictions even happen mid
song. Like on Planted In The Dark,
which opens with an eerie
electronic sample that could easily
be mistaken for the background
music for a new Tim Burton flick,
which is abruptly interrupted by a
catchy chord progression and
vocals by, Harris that could easily
be confused for Thom Yorke B-
Sides, just without that limey
accent. Wolves is a well balanced
meal you have a side of Organic
guitar rock with a pinch or
Chemical electronics, and for the
main course you have soothing
vocals with a dash of Screaming,
not too much, not too little, it’s
just right. That’s what makes
Wolves work, they understand
the term “In Moderation” There
are times they sound like Postal
Service, and there are times they
sound like Radiohead and even at
times hint at influences of Him,
but never too much, it’s just right.
The Sounds of Love
The Morning Light
Fearless
**

They sound like Lisa Loeb got in a
fight with the Beach Boys in some
horrible Hipster café, most likely
located somewhere in Brooklyn.
However it’s hard to figure out
who won the brawl. Newly
released on Fearless, The
Morning Light’s The Sounds of
Love EP fits right into the nicely
nitched Fearless family whom are
quickly making a name for
themselves as a label that harbors
this kind of behavior. What kind
of behavior do I speak of? The
Kind of behavior that lets coffee
shop hacks record records that
sound like a poor man‘s The Fray,
and not only do they let them record
records they actually put them out.
It’s just unclear what avenue these
Coffee shop rats are attempting to
go down. There are parts where it
appears that they might be looking
to hit up The Dashboard
Confessionals boulevard, and at
times they sound like they could
make a great Fray cover band, given
that Satan lets them record more
records. The Sounds of Love is a
perfect example of everything that is
wrong with the Music Industry.
Signing everyone that sounds like
the original that had moderate
success, over saturate the market
until it’s soaking wet like a 14 year
boy watching his first porno.
