When you think of Alaska, you conjure images of
igloos, Iditarod races, snow crab fishing, and week-long
nights.  Out of this boredom and bad weather comes a band
with riffs that’ll rip open your body like a husky looking for
warmth and nourishment.  Combine that with lyrics that will
touch your emotions and feed your anger, and you have 36
Crazyfists.
They’ve been around for 14 years, but you’ve probably
never heard of them, which is a downright shame.  Singer
Brock Lindow, guitarist Steve Holt, bassist Mick Whitney,
and drummer Thomas Noonan took their name from a Jackie
Chan film, which is perfect for the intensity of their music.
They moved from Alaska to Portland, Oregon with hopes of
getting more exposure.  This move worked for them as they
were signed by Roadrunner Records in 2000, and released
their first full length album for Roadrunner in 2002, Bitterness
the Star.  After releasing 2 more albums for Roadrunner, A
Snow-Capped Romance and Rest Inside the Flames, the band
moved to Ferret Records, where they will be releasing their
latest, The Tide and Its Takers on May 27.
Currently on a trek with DevilDriver, 36 Crazyfists have lost
their longtime touring companion, their RV, to a fire, and
have temporarily lost bassist Mick Whitney to his wife as
their first child was recently born.  Frontman Brock Lindow
did not let these setbacks bother him in the least as he
stretched out on a couch in the back room of Boomerz Boiler
Room on a dreary Friday night.
Having looked at Brock’s personal MySpace page, I knew
that he is a huge Philadelphia Flyers hockey fan.  As such, I
started our conversation by ribbing him a little about the
upcoming game between the Flyers, and my team, the
Pittsburgh Penguins.  “As long as we make the playoffs, I’m
happy.  I think that’ll be a good game.  That should be
Crosby’s first game back.”
