Chris Urbanowicz is annoyed by Joy
Division, not by their music mind you, or
all the “Love Will Tear Us Apart” tattoos
that every “Emo’ band member seems to
have. Sorry about that one Will Francis.
But by this point the cliché tattoo is like
being a “Video Vixen” with a tramp stamp.
Urbanowicz isn’t bothered by any of that,
but rather the comparison that his band
The Editors get from any music publication
on this great planet we call earth. “It’s fine.
I like Joy Division.” He says, “It’s kind of
mentioned in every interview, and every
review, so it’s kind of boring. It seems that
everything that is mentioned [about the
editors] is about the past. And now it’s like
you use to be compared to Joy Division,
they still ask the question but just in a
different context.” He adds, “I don’t think
we ever sounded like Joy Division. I’m
actually the only one in the band that listens
to them, and it definitely didn’t influence
my guitar playing. Sumner (Bernard
Sumner) is crap.” he concludes.
English born Birmingham to be exact The
Editors have had the luxury to fly
underneath the radar for the most part.
Having chart success across the pond in
their homeland, but only moderate success
here in the U.S. of A. Their 2005’s debut
The Back Room reaching #2 in the UK, but
#14 on the US Heatseeker Chart , which
led to their nomination for The Mercury
Prize, England’s equivalent of The
Grammy’s Best Album. “That’s the biggest
[award] in the UK.. That was a huge boost
for us in a time when we really needed it.
It was after things had died down, and we
didn’t even realize that we would be up for
it. It was a year after it had been released.
We just missed the previous years Mercury
Prize by a week. It was nice to know that
people hadn’t forgotten about who we
were.” The young guitarist says.
In the age of the “Buzz” band, The Editors
have prospered gaining a buzz in the US on
the West Coast with Los Angeles Radio
stations, KXLU 88.9 FM and KCRW 89.9
FM having played their single “Munich” in
constant rotation during 2005, leading the
Editors to that band to watch status.
During the summer of 2005 The Editors
landed themselves on the festival circuit
with them playing 2005’s Coachella and
Lollapalooza. In June of 2007 The Editors
released their sophomore record An End
Has A Start, landing them #1 on the UK
Chart, and #1 on the US
