The New World Brewery is like that one blind date that
you unwillingly go on, and somehow it turns out that you
end up marrying the broad. New World always seems to
have a line up that is in equal parts diverse and surprising.
With a line up like Lakeland’s Mouse Fire as the headliner
and San Diego’s own Dynamite Walls where could you go
wrong? Then there was the opening act which I didn’t
even know were on the bill, Roppongi’s Ace, which is the
blind date that I was referring to earlier.
Roppongi’s Ace is a three piece blues inspired act based out
of Tampa, Fl. Comprised of Alex Spoto (Guitars &
Vocals), Max Norton (Drums), and Jesse Norton (Bass). It’
s always a good sign when you can actually hear your ear
drums rattle to an organism. Most of their set Spoto sports
a slide guitar, appearing to watch and idolize Derek Trucks.
Spoto and company even manage to channel Led Zeppelin’s
ancestors in the process. Finally, making white boys every
where happy to be white, not to mention cool to be white,
again, Spoto even channels pieces of Ryan Adams on songs
like Cosby, 1955, and Sweater. You ever watch those
seven minute songs with Jimi Hendrix where for a good six
and a half minutes you ask yourself “where the fuck is this
going?” and when Hendrix finally arrives at point B, you are
left still confused? Well Spoto does that but when he
arrives at point B, you still want to add another destination
to his travels. Roppongi’s Ace is finger pickin’ good!
