Comic geeks unite. For we have found
Gwen Stacy. Ah yes, Spiderman’s fist true
love that first appeared in the beloved
Marvel comic in 1965. Wait. This isn’t that
interview is it?
You’re right. It’s better. This is Gwen Stacy,
the Christian-hardcore band from
Indianapolis, Indiana. And guess what.
They are even better then the blonde comic
character.
In Florida, you have hot days. You have
“nice” days. You rarely have freezing days.
But yet, today just happened to be that
freezing day. Around the back of the St Pete
State Theatre, band equipment, as well as
band members are splayed out in a massive
congestion of musical genius. Most are
warming up, but one band is winding down,
and even TJ Sego, Gwen Stacy’s drummer is
clad in a tank top and basketball shorts.
Here I am, bundled up in an oversized
hoodie, shaking.
“Aren’t you freezing?” I asked him. He just
laughs. “Nah, this is nothing. It feels good.”
The recorder shakes in my hand as I look up
to all of them. “Guys, I think we need to do
this fast, she’s frozen.” Cole Wallace,
vocalist chuckles. It is also at this point where
Scary Kids Scaring Kids keyboardist Pouyan
Afkary, thought he would be in Gwen Stacy
for the time being, filling is as guitarist Patrick
Meadows. Already, this is off to an
interesting start, and the first real questions
haven’t been asked yet.
Forming in Winter 2004, the band has been
touring almost non-stop for the past 4 years.
TJ looks up. “Um…how did we start? We just
started a band. That’s about it. But…Oh yeah!
Brent [Schindler - Bass/Vocals] had me go up
to Chicago to play in this punk band that was
really bad and we practiced for an hour and I
quit and asked him if he wanted to start a
hardcore band.” He shrugged. It was that
simple.
Now that the band is formed, it needs a name.
Insert ‘Gwen Stacy,’ a blonde college co-ed,
Gwen was the first true love* of Peter Parker,
and killed by the Green Goblin in The Amazing
Spider-Man #121.(*Spider-Man writers and
fans disagree about who is the character’s
“one true love,” Gwen or his later wife Mary
Jane Watson). Each an avid comic book nerd,
they readily confesses their favorite comics.
“X-Men“ , “X-men“,

“Spawn…” add in
Pouyan, blinking
innocently.
“You do know he isn’t part of the band
right?” Cole asks, whispering to me. I laugh
and nod. “Oh…okay good.” He laughs and
the interview resumes.
For those who do not know about Gwen
Stacy, lets get a little background story going:
The current lineup is a bit different now than
when the band started. Gwen Stacy was
formed by Brent Schindler and T.J. Sego along
with previous members, Chris Suter and Josh
Rickard. Chris Suter was vocalist and played
the guitar; and Josh Rickard played guitar. Six
months after the band formed, Cole Wallace
joined the band as lead vocalist. Chris Suter
began to sing back up vocals and play guitar.
A month later, Suter left the band completely;
and Patrick Meadows took the second guitar
spot.  When Josh Rickard left in 2006, Mike
Bryant became the second guitarist. Mike
Bryant parted ways with Gwen Stacy in 2007.
This left the band as a four piece band for a
few months. Bobby Oakley joined the band
and played guitar during The Life in your
