Lately the shows at The Orpheum in Ybor City have been
either hit or miss. Since the closing of The Masquerade in
2005 The Orpheum has received most of their former
booking. However ever once in a while you’ll come across
a diamond in the rough.
Stephen Christian, of Anberlin fame, was in town, which is
no surprise considering that he and his fiancé reside in
Winter Haven, just across the peninsula. Before you start
beating your head off your desk, no Anberlin wasn’t in
town, however you should still beat your head off your
desk because you did miss Anchor & Braille, Christian’s
side project. Anchor & Braille is composed of Christian
and Aaron Marsh of Copeland, as well as a few others
along for the ride.
Anchor & Braille sport the bare minimum on stage, a
Fender Amplifier, a practice bass amp, five piece drum kit,
that Marsh sits comfortably behind, a simple keyboard,
and an acoustic guitar that Christian alternates with his
keyboards. The Acoustic guitar is what strikes my
attention more. The guitar has a Polaroid of a Violin and a
picture of Jesus Christ scotched taped to the body, the
name “Tim” was written in sharpie marker beneath it.
I spent more than half the set wondering about that god
damn picture of Jesus. I mean, we all know that Christian is
a bit religious but who the hell is Tim? I’ve never read
about an apostle named Tim, Timothy, or Timmy! In
between songs Christian managed to attempt to inspire the
Tampa music scene, which is in of a much needed jolt.
“When you go in New Orleans there’s music all around
you, just a whole city on the verge of music. Let’s make
Tampa the biggest music community in the world.”
Christian also managed to get his more than shy Fiancé to
take the stage and do a song with him, This Piece.
Christian crooned over the Piano like a modern day Van
Gogh offering us all a piece of himself. His Thom Yorke
obsession shined through on songs like Wedding Funeral
and the sporadic hints of a closet John Lennon lover with
songs like Blur.
