When news first hit about Fred Mascherino of leaving
Taking Back Sunday to start his new project many were
confused and upset. However now that Warped Tour has
rolled through every metro in the United States, people are
finally getting it. “I‘m really surprised by the crowds that
come out [to see The Color Fred at Warped Tour] I love the
fact that there are kids that know our songs from seeing us
before. I‘m even more excited that everyday when we hit the
stage and I ask who has seen us before and a lot of people
haven‘t, and those are the ones that I am really excited about.”
If you lived near St. Louis you missed out on seeing TCF due
to Mascherino having problems with his throat “Luckily it
was a one day thing. It worried me though because in all of my
days of singing I have never had a show that I couldn‘t get
through by drinking tea or warming up, so I‘m just glad it was
just the one day.” He explains.
Just because Fred is out front now rocking the microphone,
doesn’t mean he’s going to be attempting any Mick Jagger
impersonations like the front man and pal of his former band
TBS. “ I‘m sure being next to Adam, who is a great front man
did rub off on me a bit, but no you won‘t see any Jagger
impersonations, I don’t have the lips for that ” He says with a
laugh.
With Mascherino no longer a part of TBS and The Color Fred
as his main squeeze it begs the question, what color is Fred?
Can anyone say Green?
Green seems to be the new cliché. Everyone and their brother
is attempting to be more green whether it be they start
recycling, buying hybrids, or installing solar panels in their
house. The Green Revolution has even effected Warped Tour.
Kevin Lyman, the founder of The Vans Warped Tour has been
using Bio Fuel in his buses for the past few years. Everyone is
being as Green as possible, but how do you stay Green while
on The Vans Warped Tour? Considering that everyday you
have to use fuel to get to the next venue. Well Mascherino you
make your CD packaging over 90% recycled material and 100%
biodegradable! “The part that’s plastic that holds the CD is
[made of] Cornstarch it will melt in water. It’s the greenest
packaging that you’re possibly going to find.” Mascherino
explains. This is a CD packaging that only pertains to The
Color Fred and not all Equal Vision artist however. “It’s
something that I went to them [Equal Vision] about and they
were very happy to work with me on. I told them ’I want the
greenest thing that you can find possible at the record store’ I
wanted it to be greener than everyone else’s record.” He adds.
This green packaging may surprise some coming from the
former TBS guitarist, but it’s no surprise at all if you know
Mascherino at all. The Color Fred’s tour bus runs on Bio Diesel
fuel and at home Mascherino’s car runs on used Vegetable Oil
that he gets from a Chinese restaurant. “It smells like French
fries a bit, but its alright.” A small price to pay for being an eco
warrior.
