not having to pencil push will be sustained. Released on April 22nd, 2008, the
album has already made it to number 18 on Billboard's Top 200. How have fans
taken to the new album? Marsala comments, "The fans are all very pleased. It
hasn't sold ten million copies or anything, but we're working on that. It's doing
really good." When asked if it can be compared at all too their debut release of
Page Avenue, Marsala reminds us of the difference between the two albums, "It
was different then. We were a brand new band and nobody knew who we were,
first of all. It was always a battle to get new fans then. It still is, but not as much,
you know? I was say to new people, or people who don't know the new stuff; it's
going over, like by then end of the set everyone is into it. The first record got
played on the radio a whole lot everywhere so that helped us get out there a lot
quicker."
One track on The Black Swan, called "Message to the World," the band confronts
United States citizens with what Story of the Year refers to as a our countries kind
of blind nationalism. "America has a lot of nationalism and a lot of pride of being
American. A lot of people (in America) don't really know anything about the rest of
the world. Nobodies traveled outside of America or gone anywhere, and they just
think 'America is the best place in the world! There is no way anybody can be any
cooler than us.' That definitely leads to a lot of problems; unnecessary hatred if
you will," says Marsala.
Going platinum and becoming so huge so quickly, such as Story of the Year did
when Park Avenue was released, can actually mean doom for a lot of artists. Singer
Marsala was aware of this fact too, and made sure to use the bands momentum to
grow musically, but still stay artistically grounded. "I think if you get too big right
at the beginning, yeah it can be a hindrance in your career. That was what was in
the back of my mind when we were first starting out. We always made sure to keep
it on the real level, but the radio was blowing up. You can't stop that from
happening. We tried to make sure we were happy and everything was the way that
we wanted it to go. Now we are definitely in a comfortable spot. We get to tour
comfortably and play the music that we love."
