category.  Scott says that "I live in New York, and I often see Trey
Anastasio (of Phish) walking around the city, so we're practically friends.  I
once had an imaginary conversation with him, as I walked by him, and he
said that we could play together because we're so similar (in my head)."
Scott, looking confused, adds, "we don't jam, so that's an interesting
comparison.  Any category we can fit into, we'll take it.  That's another
notch on our merit badge."  Ryland concernedly adds that "I hope our
concerts don't end up smelling like patchouli."
RBF's longtime bass player, Matt Wong, left the band last year.  It is not
unusual for a band to switch out a member, but for RBF, Matt had an
almost cult-like following.  Matt left so that he could focus on his family,
and was replaced by Derek Gibbs, who was posted on the band's MySpace
page as "Matt Wong Approved".  "We miss Matt, but we adore playing
with Derek.  He's an amazing bassist."  Scott replies.  The band is looking
forward to the next ten to fifteen years of playing with Derek, and is
hoping the fans will embrace Derek as they did Matt.
Reel Big Fish released their latest album, Monkeys for Nothin' and the
Chimps for Free, last summer.  "It was very primal going into record this
album.  It was supposed to be a B-Sides album.  There was absolutely no
pressure because we weren't supposed to make a full album.  One of the
things we were really amazed by is that the kids latched onto it right away.
It is kind of a pleasant blend of the older type of songs people have been
wanting to hear for a while, and a newer blend, which, without a record
label, allows us to be free as a bird," Scott explains.  In regards to the critical
reviews of the new album, Scott says that "we get these weird backhanded
compliments, or we get criticism that's not really criticism, like 'Reel Big
Fish played a great show, amazing as usual.'  Like, 'there was NO surprise
that they did well.'  What the hell is that?"  Ryland adds that "at the end of
the day, we have really great fans, and that's what's most important."
After Warped Tour, Reel Big Fish plans to go right back to their usual
marathon touring schedule.  Be sure to catch them on tour this fall, and
make sure you stay for the full two hours, and you will not be
disappointed.
