The year is 1997, and the latest underground
movement begins to infest the airwaves.  MTV
is still showing some videos (believe it or not,
MTV used to stand for Music Televison).
"Baby don't you sign those papers tonight, she
said, but I can't work in fast food all my life."
The truest words ever spoken by a fledgling
group of musicians pore out of my television
speakers.  Reel Big Fish never sold out, never
compromised their music, and have always
based their career on having fun and truly
enjoying what they do.  Sixteen years in any
business can cause anybody to become
disheartened, or at the very least, a little bored.
But, for Reel Big Fish, the 5800th day is just as
electrifying as the first.  Scott Klopfenstein
(trumpet, guitar, keyboard, and backing vocals)
and Ryland Steen (drums) took a few minutes
from their summer vacation (Warped Tour) to
share their enjoyment, and a little insight into
the minds of these Toys R' Us kids.
Reel Big Fish is widely known for their
energetic, fun live headlining shows, so Scott
says that Warped Tour is "like a vacation for
us.  We usually play numerous shows,
anywhere from fifteen to twenty in a row, over
2 hours per night.  So, [the 30 minute Warped
sets] are like nothin'.  This is, like, barely
happening."  Scott Continues, "We get to see old
friends, make new ones, see lots of great bands.
There's yoga every morning, a party every
night.  I don't see what we'd have to complain
about, as far as the band members go.  The crew
members are the ones that are really busting
their humps.  They are the backbone of this
tour."
Since their first single, and only real hit, "Sell
Out", RBF has continually amassed a bigger and
bigger fan base.  Scott thinks "it's because we're
hot.  It comes down to the fact that we're the
fuckin' sexiest of ska…which isn't saying a lot."
Scott does get a little serious by adding, "we just
always try to put on a good show.  Play to the
best of our ability, constantly cultivating a craft
of good music and playing it live and doing it
justice, and I think people like the way we
entertain people."  Ryland adds that "some
people who don't even like our music will go to
the show just because we put on a good show".
Scott cuts back in to add that "in this absolutely
mediocre world in which we live in, something
that's just a little out of the ordinary is never to
be missed."  Scott then gets a little off-center as
he begins to shout, "it's because we're awesome,
because we're the best, and anybody who wants
to fight that, can fight my words, they're
powerful!"  Everybody in the general vicinity
was now staring dead in the eyes of Scott as he
apologized for his outburst.
Because of their devotion to two hour sets and
energetic shows, certain fans and/or journalists
have put RBF into the jam band
