Before we begin this article, I, Christine, would like to state
that no members of Forever The Sickest Kids were harmed in
the making of this article.
That being said, the Dallas , Texas sextet is one of the most
rambunctious group of boys one will ever meet. Although
Forever the Sickest Kids have only been around for a short
period of time, their roots date back to the members’
childhoods. Marc Stewart (guitar) and Kyle Burns (drums) are
stepbrothers. Stewart met Kent Garrison (keyboard) in high
school. Then, when Garrison went to college, he met up with
Jonathan Cook (vocals) and Austin Bello (bass guitar). Within
a few months of the bands formation, lead singer Jonathan
Cook accidentally spent $350 that the band didn't have to
receive a front page placement on Purevolume.com, of a song
that they also didn't have. For this reason, they went into the
studio and wrote "Hey Brittany", then recorded it with their
producer Geoff Rockwell in a matter of days. “I do not suggest
doing it our way.” Burns laughs. “ It was a mistake. We just
lucked out. “Hey Brittany” was a shot in the dark. We’re
surprised it caught on like it did. But if you want to invest in
your band, and feel like you make music that a lot of people
would want to listen to, then by all means, do it.”
“When it happened, we didn’t even know it was going to
happen.” Says Stewart. “Jonathan did it. We heard him
screaming in the next room and we all looked at eachother.”
Burns looks over. “Im just relieved that kids like it as much as
we do. When we wrote the album, we were so excited. We had
it recorded for two and a half months before it was even out,
and we loved all the songs off of it. We couldn’t pick a single.
It’s good to see fans react the same way we did.”
“Its been an amazing whirlwind. They have been the best two
years years of my life.” Says gutarist Caleb Turman. But, that
doesn’t mean that the two years havent come with trials and
tribulations.
“Whenever you get signed a lot of people think that is when
shit gets easy. But that was when out work began. Whenever
we started to realize that everything was up to us and we were
getting pushed from behind, but were still the front-runners.”
Says Bello.
“When you realize the songs arent going to write themselves,”
Garrison comes in. “We had written and EP and a full-length in
a year. It’s pretty crazy”
If their career has been crazy, this is just another interview to
add to that craziness. Bewteen answering questions, members
repeadtedly hit their head on the recorder, and accuse me of
beating them. I hope the first paragraph makes sense now.
“Barracuda!” Shouts Cook, pointing to the water. Everyone
looks, only to hear a voice to the left arguing with another
journalist.
“No, I’m not fucking okay. Cant you see I’m bleeding?” A man
walks past everyone, bleeding profusely from the head. The
whole press area comes to a stand-still as everyone looks at the
bloodied body walking by.
“Did you just get done interviewing him because he was
bleeding all over his face?” Burn’s asks. “Looks like you did.
He’s pretty bloody. That was a lot of blood.”
The original interview resumes and the boys continue hitting
their head back on the recorder. Talk turns to a new album.
“ooooh.” They all look at eachother. Underdog Alma Mater the
debut album was released on April 29th, 2008. “We’re always
writing” Bello says. “I don’t know when it would be out, but,
yeah, were always writing.”
In late September, the band has will be touring the UK with
Cobra Starship. The band have also announced that they will be
holding a fall tour throughout October and November with
Cobra Starship, Hit The Lights, and Sing It Loud.
