You've probably heard the name Evergreen
Terrace before, even though you've never heard their
music. In your dreams, you've walked Santa's Little
Helper past the Flanders' house back home to your
brother Bart. Even though their name implies a
comedic cartoon dysfunctional family, their music
does not evoke the same emotion. Listening to their
latest album, Wolfbiker, you will hear the terror-filled
screams that you would imagine filled the ears of
Hannibal Lecter as his victims pled for their lives, not
exactly the comedic dysfunction of the Simpsons.
However, thirty seconds into my conversation with
Josh, guitarist extraordinaire, I see why they chose
this name. The brooding nature you'd expect from a
metal band is just not there. In its place is a sense of
humor, and a true appreciation for life and his place
in it.
Being a band from Jacksonville, Florida, Evergreen
Terrace had to drive to California to begin the tour.
Almost immediately, they drove right back to Florida,
and, at the end of the tour, "we have to drive back to
California, only to drive right back to Florida." A
hike which seems slightly ridiculous given the gas
situation we are currently in, but it's a great
opportunity for Josh and the boys as they embark on
their first real Warped Tour. "Every time we've been
scheduled to do a random date [on Warped], the
stage has not shown up, so when they offered for us
to do the entire tour, I was like, 'are you fucking
with me?' Like we're going to head to
California and there not be a stage. I would've killed
somebody if that happened."
Their latest album, Wolfbiker, was released last year on
Metal Blade, which was a new label for them. "I think a
lot of fans expected, since we're on Metal Blade, that
the album would be, like, OOHH (Josh here emulates
the low, death metal growl of many Metal Blade bands),
but it's not. It's really a better version of the way we
always are." The producer of this album was Daryl
Phenneger, who had produced Yellowcard and The Red
Jumpsuit Apparatus in the past. They met up with him
when trying to just clean up a track to release on the
album, At Our Worst. "He was super cool, and he had
a bunch of great ideas for a song that we had recorded
almost four years ago. So, because of that, and
because the studio is only a half hour away from us, we
decided to go with him for our last two albums. I think
we're gonna try to work with some-body different on
the next album, just for a change."
In 2004, Evergreen Terrace recorded the covers album,
Writers Block. This album has turned many people I
know on to Evergreen's music, so I asked Josh if they
had any plans of recording another cover album. "We
definitely want to record more cover songs. As a
matter of fact, we already have songs in mind. It
probably won't be a full album, but maybe some b-sides
or digital releases. I'm not going to tell you what songs
they are, though." Josh ended the interview by keeping
us all in suspense. You'll never know what's in store
for these guys next, but you know it'll be good.
