The new record Song For The Underdog (released on Ares records) is a 360 from In The
Mouth Of The Young (Bullets’ previous record) “This one is for the hardcore Bullets fans.”
Miller explains. “It’s got that more pop-punk feel to it.” Something that has been missing from
Bullets since their first eight song EP One Night Stand Rock and Roll Band. “People that have
been around since the beginning, they’re going fucking love it.” Miller continues. “You can
make the same record over and over, but what’s the fucking point?” Louis asks. “We went it,
and said OK we’re going to take a month on this, and that’s it. It’s easy to sit there and over
analyze everything. When you’re doing everything yourself you put a time restraint on it. You
could sit there and be Axel Rose and work on a record for 12 years. ” Louis explains.
It’s been a long road for Louis and company, from St. Louis all the way to sunny
California . It’s weird all through Louis now lives 1800 plus miles from where he grew up in
the mid-west in a lot of ways it’s like he never left. “We always do well in St. Louis .” Louis
says, “Being a local boy myself, along with three other guys from the same place.” Louis
continues. “Yea it’s funny because there’s like 20 or 30 of us [Missouri natives] that all live out
there [California]. We all try to help each other out.” Louis says, “So it a lot of ways it’s still
like home.” Louis continues. “You can easily become a big fish in a small pond, living in a small
town. You can do all the damn things that are great, but once the circus leaves town
you’re stranded in a small town.” Louis explains “But California is where we really push out
the crowds.” Louis says, as he winks at three female fans patiently waiting for the interview to
conclude. “Can you excuse me for a minute?” Louis ask, he greets the girls whom, are baring
gifts, in the form of Jack Daniels shooters. Louis looks over to Miller and winks, “A
woman after my own heart.” Louis winks again. He takes a few pictures and continues
from where he left off not losing a step.
Louis couldn’t lose a step if he tried, and drama will always seem to follow Bullets and Octane, like
what happened in early June. “So it was a three lane one way highway, I see all these cop cars, so I
walk out, because it was one of those what the fuck type moments. Jason our tour manager says,
hey let’s go check that out. We walk over there there’s a girl face down on the road. I’m standing
there going “Oh my gosh!” Jason says, I think you know that girl. I look at him and then
at the girl and back at him and say “nah, I don’t think so.” “Yea,
I think you were drinking with her earlier.” He says. I’m like I
don’t think so. I look over to her again and both her legs are
facing the same way, it was pretty fucked up, then I’m like Oh
shit! I know that girl. She bought us booze earlier, she ends up
being really fucked up, the have to get a helicopter to fly in to
drop down on the middle of the road to air lift her out of there. It
was insane, a hit and run!” Louis explains. I just stand there and
disbelief. “That’s the whole story man! No wild goose came or
anything. What do you want?” Louis screams jokingly.
“Well did you ever find out if she was OK or anything?” I
ask. “Yea we tracked her down and she had to get rods
put in her legs and shit. Think about that, if insurance
doesn’t cover that, helicopter ride, I mean at least she had
a great view of the city.” Louis says with a laugh. That’s
the came though, You’re Gonna Get it. If you’re playing
most likely you’re gonna get it. Let’s hope for no more
wounded soldiers, but that won’t slow Louis and
company down, because it’s the song of the
underdog, they wake up, they get drunk, they get
drunk and give up, so what you’re not fucking
special. They just roll with it taking it day by day,
because they are the underdogs. “It’s werid being
back out on the road.” Louis later confesses to me
as he puts his arm around, while in the
Lobby of The State Theatre as we share a
beer. “The first week is the hardest, and
then you just go with it.” I look at him for a
moment. “That’s it man what the fuck do
you want from me!” he screams
jokingly downing the rest of the
beer. [JLA]
