kid to support us, so did my dad. He always played in
bands, but he still worked 6 or 7 jobs to support the
family.”  With Leathermouth, Skeleton Crew, and My
Chemical Romance it’s needless to say he has a full
plate, which leaves him with little down time. “I really
don’t ever have a day off. If I do I usually just sleep the
whole day.” Iero says with a laugh. It isn’t unlikely for
the young New Jersey native to fly out to the west coast
on the red eye during a day off tour and do Merch for
Skeleton Crew or film a TV spot like he just did for Kat
Von D’s new show LA Ink. Which is set to air this fall.
“It’s kind of hard sometimes. You get really tired and
worn out, but in the end it pays off. You have to work
hard for it pay off.”
It’s hard to imagine that this is the same Frank Iero
that everyone met 3 years ago during My Chemical
Romance’s initial fame of 2005 when they were
plastered all over MTV. The short kid from Jersey, the
kid who was just a few credits away from a psychology
degree before dropping out, “I had two jobs, was in a
band and went to school, I never felt like I belonged in
college. I just had to do the music to survive.” He
explains. “I just really felt like I was wasting my time
there [in college] because I wasn’t learning anything
about touring, or being in a band. That’s something that
you just have to do, leave home and never turn back.”
Iero continues. There is one thing, however, that Iero
will never turn his back on and that is New Jersey.
Belleville may be his birthplace but he loves all of Jersey.
Iero could care less what Jersey’s MO is, be it dirty,
dangerous or whatever. “Every city has its streets
that you feel uncomfortable walking down, or
worry about your car getting broken into, or
people get killed. It happens in Jersey too, but
what are you going to do? I love Jersey man.”
He says as he pauses, “As a kid I had a great
time, I never hated Jersey. I never went
through that whole thing of ‘man I have to
get out of this town,’ or anything like
that. I’ll never leave Jersey.” He
explains. “It will always be near and
dear to my heart and no matter how
many places I have seen or traveled to
that I have always wanted to see, nothing to me beats
Jersey.” Iero confesses. “I guess it’s like they say home
is where the heart is.”
