The last time Chiodos graced the horribly humid state of
Florida was when they were riding high on the tidal wave
known as Taste of Chaos and blew the roof off of the
USF Sun Dome. After giving the audience a show that
was simply unforgettable, complete with haunting piano
solo, the members of Davison Michigan’s Chiodos
treated their fans to a hippie-esc pow-wow-sing-a-long.
“Down by the Bay” rang true and fans shouted out many
responses to the “Have you ever seen a…” most of them
involving your mom, making it an event in itself. “You
can get in trouble doing stuff like that [outside singing]. I
got arrested on one of the nights that we did that. Well…
I ran across the top of a police squad car. But in my own
defense it was unmarked. We do stuff like that after
shows. I love just being with the kids. I like things like
Warped Tour but I love club shows. You can pack up
and go hang with the kids. It’s not like ‘Oh, come meet
us for an autograph signing.’ It’s hey, let’s get a coffee
and hang out.” Derrick Frost, drummer of Chiodos
relayed to me as we sat on the barrier between the show
and the water at the St. Petersburg Warped Tour.
Nyght Scene: Do you ever feel like the media
stereotypes you as ‘Just another hardcore band?’
Derrick: I think stereotyping music in general is dumb.
People are so quick to throw a label on anything
anymore. People do it so easily, that’s emo, that’s this,
that’s that. Whatever people wanna call us is fine. If they
wanna listen, they’ll listen. If they don’t then they don’t.
This album it’s every kinda music genre meshed together
in its own way. Our new record is all of our past
influences, metal, hip-hop...I mean everything, all of our tastes.
Nyght Scene: What sets you apart from all the other bands on
this tour?
Derrick: What sets us apart is our musical background. We have
a keyboardist, a few other bands have a keyboardist, but no body
can play like my keyboardist. He’s classically trained. He’s not a
little sound effect guy that uses ‘em here and there. We’re just
dudes, we like to have fun. You’ll never see us mopping around or
hanging on our bus all day. We like to be out, hanging out, walking
around…being normal. There’s nothing special about us.
Nyght Scene: We all have goals in this life, be they personal
or professional. Most bands aspire to be The band that goes
down in history for either making a difference in the world or
