Dave McWane of Big D and the
Kids Table is a teacher, or one
would think with a new book that
dropped in May The Gypsy Mile.
“They say to write about what
you know. And a lot of these kids
go from high school to writing
school to journalism, what are
they going to write about family
problems?” It occurred to
McWane while on “the drink” as
he says, that he has a lot of
experiences. Which is to a point
pretty obvious, how couldn’t he
have some experiences worth
sharing considering that he has
been on the road, for 11 months
out of the year for the past
decade. “They’re not tour
happenings, but more
observations. I spent the last year
and half writing making sure it
didn’t suck, because if I’m going
to do this I have to make sure it’s
good. I have all my friends that
are going to read it, and are going
to bust my balls.” McWane
exclaims. One might compare it
to Henry Rollins’ Get In The Van,
which is a big reason why
McWane made it a point not to read Get In
The Van, “Some people say it’s similar, but I
made it a point not to read it [Get In The Van]
to stay away from making it similar.” Mcwane
explains.
McWane even has something to teach the
little kiddies, with Big D and the Kids Table’s
new DVD Built Up From Nothing, a title that
couldn’t be more fitting for Big D.
Considering that they were literally built up
from nothing, playing late nights in a room
somewhere in Boston, only to find out later
they were actually in a real band, and an
important one at that, but don’t tell McWane
that he’ll blush to no end. If you put the
question
when did you realize that you got
your big break
? He’ll simply shrug his
shoulders, and say “I didn’t realize we had
one.”

Built Up From Nothing is more of a DIY
hand book than a tour video, with little
tips and secrets of life not only on the road,
but also in a band.
Built Up From Nothing
has everything from, don’t leave your cash
box in the front seat of the Van underneath a
sweatshirt, because it will get stolen it
happens to everyone at least once. Not to
mention best ways to sneak into hotels, how
to ship and make your merchandise without
getting swindled, never talk about a show
after a show.
Built Up From Nothing also
features the insider information that kid’s
need like all the best lies on why a promoter
can’t pay you your “guarantee”. “It’s just a
DIY handbook, that’s what it is.” McWane
explains. “I want a 14, 15 year old kid
watching it writing down some notes, and
be like ‘alright, this is a good start’. Even as
simple as if you don’t want to lose your
favorite Tee-shirt, when you get to the club
you have to put all of your stuff in one pile,
because in 8 hours you’re going to be so
