From the black dress shirts and the red ties one might think of My Chemical Romance circa 2005, however I’m sure that you’ve been told before don’t judge a book by it’s cover. Black in the Mind, the central Florida rock band, is anything but a My Chemical Romance rip off. I use the term rock band because that’s what it is. Think part Weezer with polished grunge guitar riffs via Nirvana and toss in a dash of The best of MTV’s 120 minutes anything between the years of 1992-1996. “When I was 11, 12 years old I listened to a lot of Guns N Roses and I got the Nevermind album when it came out. It was definitely a life saving album.” Jeff Young Black in the Mind’s guitarist. Bred out of their local High School near the Winter Haven these young lads Mike Folds (Vocals & Guitar) Ryan Sylvester (Bass), Dustin Boehm (Drums) and Young have quickly made a buzz for themselves playing between 3 and 4 shows a week through-out the bay area. Not to mention landing a set at this year’s Warped Tour at Vinoy Park in St. Petersburg , FL on the Ernie Ball Stage. It doesn’t hurt to have Deon Rexroat and Joe Milligan of Anberlin in your corner. “Yea we actually all grew up together.” Young says, as he takes a drag off his cigarette from behind his sunglasses. His red streaked black hair makes him look like a Warped Tour veteran rather than a one show pony. “Joey [Rexroat] and I actually went to junior high together. When we were in 8th grade I wanted to learn to play guitar and he taught me.” Young explains. But don’t think Young’s relationship is what got them the spot. They won a spot in The Battle of the Bands fair and square. “There was actually a 3 month long voting for The Battle of the Bands and we got on it for the last week and a half of the competition, we came in third place, so that’s not too bad for a week and a half.” Young shrugs. Not bad at all. “We’re just here to get our name out there and have some fun.” Young says. Black in the Mind will be play pretty much anywhere to get their name out there but do they have a favorite venue. “Warped Tour’s a pretty cool venue.” Young laughs. Black in the Mind have just finished a new EP which you can pick it up at any Virgin Records Mega Store or on www.blackinthemind.com, www.bigcartel.com, where you get all kinds of Black in the Mind Merchandise.
