“Husker Du’s from Minneapolis ?” Andrew Neufeld front man for
Canadian hardcore band Comeback Kid asks, as he takes a swig
from his bottle of half full Corona . “Yea, they are.” They respond.
Husker Du is at the end of short list of Minneapolis bands that I
ramble off. In search of one that will strike a chord with Neufeld,
“Yea I never saw The Replacements, or Soul Asylum, I more went
to Minneapolis for hardcore bands, are you sure Husker Du is from
Minneapolis?”  He asks one more time cocking his head to one side
looking as if he is waiting for me to say got’ca! “Positive.” I
respond.  “Hey Kevin.” Neufeld calls out to Kevin Call Comeback
Kid’s bassist who is from Minneapolis . “Is Husker Du from
Minneapolis ?” Neufeld asks Call for a second opinion, because
after all, a music journalist wouldn’t know what the hell they were
talking about. Without hesitation Call responds “Yup.” Neufeld
looks dumfounded “Really? Wow I did not know that.” Neufeld
gasps and returns to his Corona .
“Is it cool if we do the interview in here?” Asks Neufeld, as I sit
down at a booth with a table that has a few empty Corona bottles, a
glass of water and one empty shot glass that use to contain Tequila,
along with two lap tops one that belongs to Neufeld and one that
belongs to Comeback Kid’s tour manager Puc. “Yea, man this is
cool.” I respond. The Garden is a restaurant that sits on Central
Avenue in down town St. Petersburg, just around the corner from
Janus Landing and next door to Detroit Liquor (however the Liquor
store does not carry 40’s of any kind so it dumfounds me on
how     they can call themselves Detroit Liquor) “It’s better than
being out there. At least there’s air conditioning in here.” Neufeld
respond, as he fans himself for a moment. “It’s not so hot, as it is
the humidity.” I respond. “Whatever it is its fucking hot!” Neufeld
says. I have lived in Florida for four years now, so it’s not so bad
for me, but for someone from Winnipeg just across the northern
border I guess it could be quite a shock.
Bred in snow capped Winnipeg , Canada just across the
border and a twenty hour trek from Alexisonfire’s home
base of St. Catherine , Ontario it’s obvious that Winnipeg
has something else brewing than the Toronto scene. While
the Toronto scene is more spread out with several scenes
going on, if you like Indie Rock the have it, if you want
hardcore they have it, and if you like Techni-co I’m sure
there’s some club that has it. Winnipeg has a completely
different vibe going on, with bands like Weaker Than, and
Propagandhi and Sick City (who is Neufeld’s brothers
band), it’s a tighter knitted scene than Toronto . Winnipeg
has been put on the map, and Comeback Kid are leading the
tribe sending down smoke signals to let everyone know that
this isn’t Neil Young’s Winnipeg anymore.

Kid has managed to wow fans and critics a like, with two
