contained no songs written by Deal, neither did 1991's
Trompe Le Monde, which was laced with songs about
UFOs and other Science Fiction themes in songs such
as 'Planet of Sound' and 'Motorway to Roswell'.
Trompe Le Monde also featured a cover of the Jesus
and the Mary Chain song 'Head On'. There were
keyboards featured on tracks 'U Mass' and 'Alec Eiffel',
something that would have been a form of sacrilege
during the Surfer Rosa days.
In early 1993, Francis announced in an interview on
BBC Radio he announced that the band was finished
and offered no explanation at the time, unbeknownst to
the other members of the band. He later telephoned
Santiago and subsequently faxed Deal and Lovering
about the break up. Francis later regretted breaking up
the band in that fashion, as he did not allow the rest of
the band an opportunity to discuss the move.
Francis changed his name to Frank Black and went on
to release 11 solo albums under the name of Black
Francis, Frank Black and Frank Black and The
Catholics. Deal started her own project, The Breeders,
with her sister Kelley and scored a hit with 1993's
'Cannonball'. Unfortunately, they failed to record
another album for several years due to internal
problems in the band. Lovering went on to become a
magician. Santiago played guitar on one of Black's solo
albums, and wrote some theme music for Fox
Television.
In late 2003, Frank Black's publicist released an official
statement saying that a Pixies reunion tour would
occur. Starting on April 14, 2007 The Pixies did a warm
up tour through the US, followed by an appearance at
the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, The
Pixies spent much of 2004 touring through Brazil,
Europe, and Japan.
There were rumors of The Pixies releasing a new
album, which would be their first since 1991, Black
presented the rest of the band with a new batch of
songs in 2006, but ditched them for being "too fakey".
In October of 2006, Black informed NME that The Pixies
would start rehearsing in January 2007, however in a
June 2007 interview, Black reportedly said "I don't think
that that Pixies record's gonna happen."
Although The Pixies released relatively few albums,
you cannot deny their influences on every band that
profited from the 'Alternative Rock' boom of the early
nineties. From Nirvana to Weezer, they all took a page
from The Pixies' play book, and they admit it. "I've
heard it said about the Velvet Underground that while
not a lot of people bought their albums,
everyone who did started a band. I think this is largely true about the Pixies as
well. Charles' secret weapon turned out to be not so secret and, sooner or later,
all sorts of bands were exploiting the same strategy of wide dynamics. It
became a kind of new pop formula and within a short while, "Smells Like Teen
Spirit" was charging up the charts and even the members of Nirvana said later
for all the world, that it sounded like a Pixies song." Gary Smith said. He who
produced The Pixies Come on Pilgrim EP. Of course, Kurt Cobain didn't deny
saying this in a Rolling Stone Interview, "I was trying to write the ultimate pop
song. I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies. I have to admit it (smiles).
When I heard the Pixies for the first time, I connected with that band so heavily
I should have been in that band - or at least in a Pixies cover band. We used
their sense of dynamics, being soft and quiet and then loud and hard." The
same soft/quiet loud/soft dynamic that many critics gave Cobain credit for
inventing.
