'The Pixies' most people will think of the
cute little female haircut, or something with
wings that flies around sprinkling dust
everywhere rather than the influential indie
rock band out of Boston. The Pixies could
be considered, well next to Morrissey and
The Smiths of course, one of the first
"Emo" bands in many respects. With
Francis being this Bean Town band's
primary songwriter, something that would
lead to the death of The Pixies as well.
Black had a distinctly desperate and
yowling delivery of vocals with lyrics that
were often cryptic and off beat, dealing in
subject matter including everything from
UFOs and surrealism to references of mental
instability, all this often laced with violent
Biblical imagery, physical injury and even
incest.
The Pixies were a 'project' kind of a band that
happened completely by chance. "I was in
Puerto Rico, and I had a chance of starting a
band or going to New Zealand to Watch
Haley's Comet, and I almost went to see
Haley's Comet but at the last second I decided
not too. I wanted to start a band." Black
remembers.
Upon first impression, you may over look
The Pixies for their sound. However, without
The Pixies it's hard to imagine the existence of
bands like Nirvana (whose 1992 album
Nevermind, was considered to be a complete
rip off of The Pixies' 1988 album,
Surfer Rosa,
by critics) and artists like Kurt Cobain, the
guitarist and vocalist for Nirvana, alike. The
Pixies' sound was never a part of any obvious
genre. They blended 1960's pop melodies with
folk music of the same time with just a dash of
1980's post hardcore by way of Husker Du
and that sound that was their MO for the most
part. It is most evident on records like
Come
  On Pilgrim
(1987), Surfer Rosa (1988),

Doolittle (1989), and Trompe le Monde
(1991). Francis also seemed to have an
obsession with 1960's surf rock as well,
