`one of the few uncharted areas in the world.
Something the rest of us would be ignorant to.
How unhinged or unnatural this upbringing
may seem Gourley wouldn’t change any of it.
“Alaska is the prettiest place I have ever been.”
Gourley has said.
I first met John Gourley nearly a year ago,
Well I shouldn’t say meet because I saw him he
was sitting directly in front of me, and I knew
who he was. When he got up he nodded at me
and shook my hand, and I did the same since
obviously neither one of us was capable of
words due to the activity that we both just took
part in. So I met John Gourley and he shook
some dude’s hand that he just smoked some
weed with. I was sitting in the second bench of
The Photo Atlas’ tour van. A band that had
shared the stage with his band Portugal The
Man earlier that night, a band that I had also did
an interview with earlier that afternoon over
beers, my favorite type of interview. I was part
taking in the after show recreations and sitting
next to a girl that I had meant earlier that was a
friend of friend’s friend, with Radiohead
playing through the Van stereo speakers, I
remember thinking to myself thinking to myself
this is probably what it was like for journalist
back in the seventies listening to Pink Floyd in
a van somewhere after a concert “enjoying
themselves” I remember thinking that
Radiohead is our generation’s Pink Floyd, and
the band that I had just seen Portugal The Man
was this generation’s Led Zeppelin,. Although
many may argue that our generation’s Led
Zeppelin is The White Stripes or Jet, two bands
that are just a bit too pretentious for me.
Gourley plays with an unadulterated raw
emotion. An emotion that seems to make him
embarrassed which could be the reason why he
plays with his back to the stage with the bill of
his hat pulled down tight with the hood of his
wind breaker tied tight around his hat, so tight
that you can see the bunches. Tonight he didn’
t sing to his audience he sang to himself
because in the end that’s what this whole shit
house is for, and that’s what the Jack White’s
of this world just don’t get.
