The humid air around Jannus Landing isn’t directly due to the
weather. It can also have something to do with the massive
amount of young teenagers that have skipped the last half of their
day at school (in some cases the entire day) crowding around the
building.  But what band could cause so much buzz, this early
before a show? That would be Chicago-natives The Academy Is…
Based in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, the band
began their journey to music stardom in 2002. It was the rising pop-
punk music scene in Chicago that brought bands like Fall Out Boy,
Plain White T’s and Rise Against to main-stream audiences
everywhere.
Adam Siska, bassist and youngest member of the band, took some
time out to sit down with us on this humid October evening while
the band was getting ready for their headlining show. The
Sleeping With Giants Tour, named from a song lyric on their new
album,
Santi, began on September 15 and the band had been on
the road for a month already with up and coming Sherwood, dance-
rock superstars The Rocker Summer, and Armor for Sleep. “We’ve
been having an amazing time on the tour.” Siska says. “All the
bands are really awesome. We’re excited to be on the tour with
Armor for Sleep. We have toured before with them, so it was like a
happy homecoming.”
The band is on the Fueled by Ramen label, and on DecayDance,
the imprint label headed by Fall Out Boy front man Pete Wentz.
Almost every article written about the band will namedrop Wentz,
as well as label-mates Panic! At The Disco, and Cobra Starship. As
a fan of all of the above bands, it pains me to see each of them be
compared to each other.
Siska feels somewhat the same. “We are our own band. We stand
for a different thing. We are all completely our own thing. No one
tries to sound like the other, or ride the other’s coat tails. We are
so happy to be friends with them and always have been. But if we
are associated with them, we don’t mind. I’d say it’s a good thing.
They are some of our best friends in the world.”
The Academy Is… have a small, tight-knit group of
friends aside from their label brethren. Their touring crew,
equally as famous as the bands, have assisted in making
weekly episodes of TAI TV, which can be seen on the
bands official website every Sunday at 9pm, as well as
directing three music videos. Jack The Camera Guy, as he is
affectionately known, directed videos for a b-side called 40
Steps, as well as Neighbors, and (Sleeping With Giants)
Lifetime, all of which are fan and band favorites.
