Sherwood, who is newly signed to
MySpace Records, has rapidly gained a
status as a band that makes things happen
on their own. They have booked their own
tours since day one. The quartet has kept
everything DIY since day one. The band
has recorded their album with Lou
Giordano, who has produced albums for
Taking Back Sunday and Sunny Day Real
Estate.
Speaking to Joe Greenetz, the bands
drummer, I learned that they aren’t only
about the music. They are very charitable
dudes. It's hard to find in a scene where
everyone is self-loathing and horribly
egocentric. Where the tighter pants you
have and the crazier your hair is, the cooler
you are.
“We have been really involved with
charities from the beginning of this band.
We always try to mention one or two of
them in interviews. Thehungersite.com is
amazing. With a simple click of a button,
you can provide food for people in third
world countries via sponsors.”
The band has also raised money for
charities. On their tour with Motion City
Soundtrack, they raised money for a
charity called Blood Water Mission, works
with a network of organizations equipped
and dedicated to clean water development
in Africa.
The next one they are going to get involved
in is called International Justice Mission. It
exists to protect people from violent forms
of injustice, like being forced into slavery
and sex work, by securing rescue and
restoration for victims and accountability
for perpetrators. Thus ensuring that public
justice systems work for the poor.
“It’s the least we could do. We are very
fortunate to be able to do this for a living
and so we feel that it’s very easy to
become selfish in this lifestyle, so we stay
involved with things like this. Whatever
amount of “celebrity” we have can be put
to good use.”
I mention Pete Wentz’ work with Invisible
Children, an organization I am
also a part of. Does someone with his
caliber of “celebrity” take away from the
charity when there are 12 and 13-year-old
girls are going “I want Pete Wentz to love
me” and they join the work only because
of his name on it?
“Any publicity is good publicity in the case
of charities. If you lend your name to
things that people otherwise would never
consider and you get the issue out there, as
long as good things are getting done, then
the motives behind it are good. It is one
more name on a petition, one more can of
food. In a perfect world, those girls would
turn around and go ‘well, I do care about
people in third world countries being
forced into being child soldiers’. It’s better
than nothing happening at all.

giving doesn’t have to stop after Christmas.
