The State Theatre can be a scary place. The
bar always has that smell that is a mixture of
stale urine, cheap cigarettes, and dead
hookers. How do I know what a dead hooker
smells like? Two reasons. One, I have been to
The State Theatre a million and one times and
two, well let’s not get into the second reason.
Let’s just say it involves The Bronx, some
speed balls and, well, let’s just leave it at that.
The bar at the State Theatre is just the tip of
the iceberg. If you have ever been back stage,
now that’s some freaky shit. I heard that it
was once in consideration for the shooting of
the Film SAW, but once the producers took a
look at it, they said ‘fuck this shit’ and hauled
ass. The dressing room is a joke that no one
gets as it sits at the top of the stairs. It’s the
size of a handicapped bathroom stall with a
faded white refrigerator that looks to be circa
1902. I saw a carton of milk in there and I
swear it had the Lindberg baby on it. Steve
Juliano, I Am Ghost’s vocalist reaches into
said refrigerator. As he glances back at me
and gives me a nod I whisper to myself, “Don’
t drink the milk. Don’t drink the milk.” He pulls
out three Coronas. “You want a beer?” He
asks. “Sure.” I respond. He hands the other
beer to Ryan Seaman, Drummer for I Am
Ghost.
Long Beach, California may not be the best
place for a Goth kid. You always have to wear
black and with temperatures reaching as high
as 111 degrees during the summer months, it’s
enough to make a 14-year-old boy with guy-
liner to say fuck it and attend an audition for
Laguna Beach. As unsettling as Long Beach
may be for a Goth kid, it may be even a more
unlikely setting for a Goth-Punk band.
However, that hasn’t stopped California-ites I
Am Ghost.
It has been said “that some bands toil in
obscurity for years before anyone discovers
them, while many great acts are never
discovered at all,” they also say that I Am
Ghost is not one of those bands. “There are still
tons of people that don’t know who we are.”
Steve Juliano comments. Obviously Epitaph
knew who they were, the label signed them in
late 2004, after playing just their fifth show!
“How many bands do you hear being signed
after their fifth show?” Seaman asks. Not only
was it just their fifth show they were only
together as a band a mere 3 weeks. They would
spend hours passing out thousands their self
recorded demo to anyone who would take it. “I’d
be up at 4 in the morning burning copies [of the
demo] three at a time, and everyone else in the
band was burning them off their lap tops as well.
We went to every punk show, every hardcore
show, every “ska” punk show, and any metal
show we could think of and pass them out.”
Juliano says. “I definitely think we are where we
should be.” Seaman adds and where they are
tonight is opening up for legendary Punk band
Strung Out at the historic State Theatre in St.
Petersburg, FL.
