What do you do when you’re in the most successful rock band since Seattle’s Nirvana, not to mention becoming one of Jersey’s most popular native sons since Jon Bon Jovi? Well if you’re Frank Iero of My Chemical Romance you build something completely different. “Leathermouth is the anti My Chemical Romance, Leathermouth is the side of me that I’m not proud of, it’s the side of me that hold’s a grudge.“ Iero told Nyght Scene earlier this year. Leathermouth is the hardcore punk band fresh out of New Jersey. With songs like Murder Was the Case They Gave Me, Body Snatchers Forever and Fifth Period, it’s hard not to get caught up in the buzz between the 150-second songs, the crashing guitars, and the throat wrenching vocals. It’s near impossible to not get addicted. Iero, who is Leathermouth’s frontman, is joined by a few fellow Jersey-ites: guitarists Bobbie Venom and Vincent Avarali, bassist Andrew Escobar, and drummer Steve Oyola. While Iero will always see Leathermouth as a side project, his main duties being at the mercy of My Chemical Romance, that doesn’t stop the obsession that fans have begun, In recent months, Leathermouth’s Myspace friends list has leaped from a 7,000 mark to the approach 20,000 mark along with over 250,000 plays on their songs. Not bad for a band that has barely played 2 shows, one being a CMJ show in their home state of New Jersey this past October. Currently signed to Iero’s label, Skeleton Crew, Leathermouth is looking to finish their recordings by the first part of the 2008 and will be followed by the release of their debut album, which is yet to be titled. The untitled record has been promised to be 11 songs long, and in sprit of 1980’s hardcore, will only be 26 minutes in length. It will feature a 26-minute horror film to go along with it. With a scheduled break for My Chemical Romance resting in the future, Iero assures us that it will be full steam ahead for his anger management known as Leathermouth. “My dad describes it as nervous music.” Iero comments with a laugh. “He says it makes him nervous.”
Yes, that’s a woman, and her name is Renee Phoenix. And yes, she’s growling deeper than you could every wish to. So now that you have that little piece of information you can start feeling better about getting an erection when you hear her growling the lyrics to “Indestructible”. Based out of Jacksonville, FL where Phoenix, Jarrod Welsh drums, and Jeff Chamberlain bass all met while attending the University of North Florida. The Explicits are a Punk/Metal band leaning more towards that gritty Punk Rock side, often ripping through a half a dozen songs in a mere 10 minutes. You can’t brush The Explicits off as just another punk rock chick band, especially one that has a front woman that sounds like a dude and not some Gwen Stefani knock off. Still scratching your head? Think what Charles Bukowski would sound like if he drank twice as much liquor and smoked five times more cigarettes. “Everybody brings something different to the table.” Phoenix says, “Jarrod is more into metal with his favorite band being "Slipknot", while I’m more into grunge and 90's music in general with "Garbage" being my favorite band... and Jeff is influenced by such bands as "Avenged Sevenfold" and "Billy Talent." Each of us has grown up listening to different genre's of music, which only adds to the diversity and uniqueness of our sound .” If you are unfamiliar with the Explicits I recommend that you become familiar real quick, because Phoenix and company are on the fast track for Florida’s next big thing.
