You know, to hear about all of the ‘reunion’ tours and the ‘comeback albums’ scheduled (and bombing during) 2007, I’m left with one phrase in my head.
“When you’re dead, lay down.”
It may be a simple concept to some. Apparently, individuals such as Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, The Backstreet Boys, the Spice Girls, or even the Eagles have caught onto this concept though. What I’ve found in my short time here on planet Earth is simply this. Every band has a golden age. Every artist’s sound is supposed to change a little and unless you’re one hell of an exception…every artist is meant to retire. For groups like the Backstreet boys or once reigning “Princess” of pop, Britney Spears. The time is simply gone. The sound isn’t welcome except in the most nostalgic of moments and even in those moments the need doesn’t last very long. You can listen to about one song before the nostalgia is gone.
Now for those of you who would never admit to the fact you once liked ‘this’ group or ‘that’ song here’s some food for thought. Think of how old you were when you last listened to that cd you won’t admit to owning in the light of day. Now think about how old you are now…do we see my point? The music that existed when these bands and pop artists were at their height just doesn’t exist anymore. They seem more than oblivious to it with their continued attempts.
Record flops for the year seem to be highlighted by Britney Spears’ recent failure. The media is so caught up in her that last year I even had a professor who had us discussing her crazy life in class! In a college classroom! Enough is enough! To those who are thinking about a reunion that we all know will never work, some words of advise.
